The University of Chicago Medicine is investing in the future of healthcare in Chicago’s Southland with the launch of two new physician residency programs at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey. The family medicine and internal medicine programs aim to address regional physician shortages, expand access to care and support Ingalls Memorial’s vision of becoming a model academic community hospital.
The initiative is especially important for the region’s underserved populations, including patients covered by Medicaid and residents living below the federal poverty level.
The three-year programs will begin in July 2027, with eight family medicine residents and 16 internal medicine residents in the inaugural classes. At full capacity, the programs will serve 24 family medicine residents and 48 internal medicine residents. Training will take place at Ingalls Memorial and community healthcare facilities, including Family Christian Health Center, with additional clinical experiences across the UChicago Medicine system. Internal medicine residents will also work at a new outpatient clinic designed to help patients transition from hospital discharge to ongoing care.
The programs are expected to benefit both patients and future physicians through personalized training, closer faculty supervision, increased physician capacity and more coordinated care. Supported by UChicago Medicine, a $5 million grant from the Ingalls Development Foundation and the BridgeGME Chicago grant, the initiative builds on several years of integration and investment in medical education. By training physicians in the communities that need them most, Ingalls Memorial hopes to strengthen the regional healthcare workforce and encourage more physicians to establish their practices in the Southland.
