UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital, with support from Ingalls Development Foundation, offers Southland residents opportunities to screen for and participate in advanced clinical oncology research trials while staying close to home. This unique oncology research program reduces barriers to entry by removing many socioeconomic, cultural, financial, and logistical issues for patients living in the South and Southwest Cook County, giving them the best chances for recovery.
Fear, mis-trust, cultural misunderstandings, and lack of access to care are often barriers to clinical trial participation for underrepresented populations in the U.S. The UCM Ingalls community based comprehensive oncology and cancer research program has overcome these barriers through years of experience building trust by ensuring minority patients are evaluated for clinical trials and equally represented. Our success enrolling minority patients in cancer clinical trials is proven with a rate of enrollment among African American patients routinely exceeding 30% while the national average rate of enrollment is less than 10%.
