Illinois, like much of the nation, faces a growing mental health crisis.

  • 1 in 5 adults experiences mental illness each year.
  • Nearly 500,000 Illinois residents live with a serious mental illness.
  • The UChicago Medicine Ingalls service area has one of the highest behavioral health emergency visit rates in the state, particularly in ZIP codes 60426, 60827, and 60419.
  • Over 50% of Ingalls patients rely on Medicaid, and 9.1% are uninsured, reflecting significant socioeconomic challenges.

OUR RESPONSE

UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital is leading the effort to close the mental health gap through expanded access, continuity of care, and innovation.

Integrated Behavioral Health Services

  • 95-bed psychiatric hospital providing multidisciplinary, academic-level care in Harvey, IL.
  • Four outpatient locations (Harvey, Tinley Park, Flossmoor, Calumet City) offering in-person and virtual therapy.
  • Programs and Treatments:
    • General and specialty psychiatric clinics
    • Group and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
    • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
    • Medication management and individualized treatment plans
    • No-cost confidential assessments

Innovative Initiatives

  • Serious Mental Illness Center of Excellence (SMICOE):
    A new, community-based model integrating research with clinical care, designed to improve outcomes for patients with complex behavioral health needs.
  • Transition Care Treatment Team:
    Addresses a critical care gap by ensuring continuity between inpatient and outpatient services for individuals after their first episode of psychosis.
  • Forensic Mental Health Unit (Pilot):
    In partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services, this first-of-its-kind program provides treatment for adults with nonviolent misdemeanor charges, helping them regain stability and participate in their legal proceedings.
