Impacting Local Cancer Care: Brenda’s Story
Through our close social partnership with the local community, we exceed the national average and nearly 50% of our trial participants identify as African American. This helped to distinguish our small community program on a national level, having won the Conquer Cancer Foundation Award in 2014, and receiving our 3-year Commission on Cancer commendation having achieved all benchmarks.
Barriers to care are complex, but notably include barriers to high-quality health care for African Americans who are disproportionally affected by cancer.
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a not-for-profit alliance of 26 of the world’s leading cancer centers, endorses clinical trials as “best management” for patients facing cancer. It is through clinical trials that we have been led to recent discoveries regarding immunotherapy and targeted therapies that have promoted both longer life and improved quality of life.
At any given time at UChicago Medicine Memorial, nearly 60 clinical trials are in progress.
